Literature Text

Lady (Name) took the steps to the upper floor with haste. How she suddenly felt energetic, she doesn't know. It was the drink, she thought though it should make her feel giddy it confused her so. It should be the one Claude had given her.

And when her fiancé had been busy, he had managed to whisper in her ear previously. His breathe seemed too warm on her skin. And Sebastian? His kisses were hot and passionate at the same time. Every ounce of sanity had left her when she's wrapped her arms on him and urge him to continue. And she was too sensitive then! Every little thing he does with his tongue, she remembered. She hated the fact that she liked it. Damn him.

She entered the library and allowed herself to breathe. Why had it been so difficult not to find this exciting? She should be scared somewhat but maybe the feeling would come later. The library was dimly lit. Only a lamplight illuminated from the longtable. She left her post by the door and took the lamp and explored. She loved books and she had a collection herself in their manor. This place gave her an homey feeling but the atmosphere of something about to happen just couldn't vanish. She swallowed. Maybe this wasn't a good idea. Trusting a man she'd just met. She silently chuckled to herself. Hadn't she done the same thing with Sebastian?

"My lady."

She stiffened in surprise. She should turn around but she didn't. He was at the other side of the long table. Now with him behind her she felt anxious.

"Dr. Faux." she called. "My fiancé didn't share mutual feelings towards you when I mentioned our meeting previously."

"But you still came." he murmured.

She finally turned to face him. "You know doctor I'm a bit ill-tempered when it comes to waiting. So please blurt out what you have to say."

"Do you really want to know?" He adjusted his glasses.

She moved from her spot only to be stalked by him. Her eyes askance followed him. Blast it, he moves the same as Sebastian! He eyed her, observed her, unnerved her, and irritated her just like Sebastian.

"What?" She blurted out.

"I find you most appealing when you are silent."

She colored. "And what is—we are not here to flirt, doctor. I came here to gather what you have to say about my fiancé."

"Then please have a seat and let's make it all civilized." he gestured with his gloved hand.

"No, thank you. I'm fine standing up." She did want to sit. But she can't. If she does he will corner her and that is one thing she learned from her dear beloved. He merely shrugged, a lazy movement of his shoulder before seating himself and crossing his legs. Alas, he was making her agitated with his prolonged pauses. "Well?"

"We have all the time in the world." he eyed her.

She huffed, crossing her arms. "You clearly don't know anything. You just want me here alone. Did his lordship hired you to end me?" his lordship was the man who betrayed her.

"I don't know who you're talking about."

"Then this discussion is done." she marched for the door.

But a force shoved her back to the shelves. She blinked. Last moment he was seating opposite to her, then the next thing he was blocking her by his arm beside her head.

"Please." She breathed, startled. Oh how she felt weird. Had it been the alcohol she drank? She mustered every courage she had not to tremble with fear. "If you do have something to tell me...do it quickly, I've got to return to my fiancé."

"Why the haste?" he whispered.

"If you stall one more time..." she felt her senses heightened. She blinked and gasped at the same time.

"Tell me, is your deal nearing the end?"

The question doesn't make sense. Only one thing is important to her. "What did you put in my drink?!"

"So you noticed." Claude pulled away an inch. "I gave you a little push to be more honest when you talk to me."

She eyed his other hand reaching to touch her face then back to his. "You will answer my questions because if you don't..."

He pulled her from their position then brought forth a seat. "Sit." he said.

She swallowed and obeyed.

"I find your temper challenging so you better not provoke me." He whispered closely.

She should have known he is far creepier than her fiancé. The thought of someone discovering them so close entered her mind and that wouldn't be a good display of character not when she'll announce the wedding.

"Be quick about it." she snapped. She was losing her patience. Only her coldness kept her fear at bay and it helps.

"My lady, for a smart and upright woman, you still hadn't seen the truth coming."

The chair was positioned across the window glass. It was night and when Claude leaned in to blink his eyes turned bright crimson. Her shock was registered on her reflection. She was silent for a moment. Breathing was the only thing in mind. Then it dawned on her. How could she be so blind?! Maybe it was the belief that demons might only be few that she hadn't seen them around.

"My kind are as abundant as the hopeless and corrupt souls that crave retribution. And one of those souls caught my attention."

"There was never a secret, is it?" she asked.

"No." He leaned back and took the place beside her. "Even demons play with the truth. You took my word on it and you believed it."

"You lied." she looked up to him, accusation in her eyes.

"That we do. But I had to give to you, you came to your own accord."

She glared. "What do you care if I know the truth?"

He gave no reply. She was feeling restless. (Name) eyed the door and took her chance of escape. She bolted from her chair and to the door.

"He was once a man, that demon."

That got her attention. But she still turned the knob. It didn't budge. She cursed under her breathe. "How would I know you’re not lying?"

"You don't. I'm merely planting the seeds of doubt to your contract. I am making you believe that everything I say has a grain of truth and I am making a good show of it."

"Then why are you doing this?"

"Same as you," he took one step forward to her. "For revenge."

"How did you even know I would listen to you or even help you? We have a deal. He holds my soul, he can read my mind."

Claude slowly blinked his eyes. "You don't know do you?" He made an amused smile. "How very pathetic of him..." to devote the thing that is called love for her "No, my lady. We demons can't read minds we just know your desires and weaknesses and we use those tools to get what we want most. Your soul."

"I may not know what you're talking about but I know your kind doesn't have any feelings to be described as a human's." she explained.

"You surprise me with your straight perspective. I wonder what humane feelings he's feeling when he's with you."

She clicked her tongue, irritated. He was always evading her questions, always changing the subject. "He doesn't feel anything. He's just doing his duty as the perfect fiancé. "

"All the same as to why I want my revenge." Claude resumed his predatory walk towards her.

"I won't help you." She backed against the wooden door.

"I've concluded your answer a long time ago."

There isn't a way to escape him except to run around the library but that would be foolish. The windows are shut so it's hopeless. Her heart thundered with dread. She doesn't want to die here but she won't let him murder her without a fight. (Name) stood her ground and readied for him to strike. Then it hit her, Claude is a demon too. She swallowed. It was hopeless.

He froze mid-step. There had been a knock. She had felt the two beats from the other side of the wood beat like her own heart.

"Anyone in there? Madam? Sir?"

The voice isn't familiar so the one outside was none other than a footman.

"I think I've heard voices in there." said another voice.

Her heart leaped. Sebastian!

"Open this door," she ordered Claude. "Or everyo will know what you've done and maybe my fiancé would find a way to exorcise you out of that body or maybe even kill you."

His murderous look on her would definitely rival Sebastian's. He inserted the key all the while his face an inch from hers. Before turning the key, he escaped a breath and his character changed to someone less threatening.

"He killed me, my lady." His weary tone affected her. He glance at her once more, his eyes sad. "Once."

The door creaked open from the lock and vertical light shined to reveal most of Claude's face to the outsiders. Her eyes widened at what he revealed. She knew their history then. It came to her like a memory never even experienced but she now understood. "No."

Lady (Name) stood between them and stepped out into the light. Leaving the other 'man' in the darkness and the other with her.

She stepped close to Sebastian and held his face by her hand, forcing herself to act the loving fiancée. "My love," her eyes twitched at the sweetest tone she used for the first time. "Forgive me for not telling you, I was having a hard time at the party and you do know how I love books."

Apparently you're not the only one, Sebastian thought. "And him?"

"Oh, Dr. Faux? He caught me by surprise when he entered the library. I thought I was going to be alone."

His eyes sent daggers to the other demon. He shifted his mind to important matters and faced the footman. "My dear sir, please send a note to your employer that we, Lady (Name) and I, will be having an important announcement to make."

Leaving the trio in a tension, the man bowed and gladly walked away.

The people greeted the new couple with smiles and cheers. Many had shook hands with Sebastian and he returned them with practiced smiles. She on the other hand stayed her cool, nodding to anybody who congratulated her and if she wants, smiles a little in return.

"Have you seen him?" She was referring to her ex-lover.

"Yes, he was quite frustrated. He is frustrated." the good news was opposite to his sour expression.

"With you?" she asked.

"I want every detail of your conversation with that demon doctor. Alone." He whispered.

"You can't force me to–"

Sebastian lifted her chin and leaned in for a kiss. Everyone around and below them cheered. She couldn't help but to act the lovesick lady. He returned his kiss unemotionally but didn't leave the performance unnatural for the crowd. At last they finished and she waved her hand to the crowd some more and smiled. A genuine one. She couldn't be happier to be one step closer to having her revenge.

But he does not hold his liberty. For Ciel ordered him to do the right thing and never wrong. Oh, irony. But for him it is better than to be stuck with him for the rest of his immortal life.
